African Women's Forum
The forum was held on 5th May 2007. It was a collaboration
of three different Organizations. It was hosted by three
African Women namely Namuyaba Temanju (Boma Yetu),
Marlene Houngbedji (ACRC), and Charlotte Kakoubi (The
Ivorian Association of Southern California) .

The main topic of discussion was women’s health. There was
a Doctor present who give a short talk and answered
questions. The Dr.Siima Nalwanga Kavuma chose to talk
about cancer. She gave the participants some background
information on the disease, statistics, preventative
measures and knowledge about how to self examine.  She
however emphasized the importance of regular checkups.

The discussion went very well and the women present learnt
a lot and were able to have their questions answered. They
were also able to get clarification on certain information that
they were not clear about. The discussions also addressed
young women’s health. The doctor also gave information to
young women about what kinds of behaviors they need to
avoid so they avoid putting themselves at high risk
healthwise.
Early detection. It was determined that for various
reasons we don’t go to the doctor early. We self
medicate and sometimes we are in denial about the
seriousness of our illnesses. The reasons could be
because of lack of health insurance, immigration
status or just not understanding the implications of
what could transpire. What ends up happening is that
issues that may have been easily been resolved
become complicated. It has even resulted in death on
some occasions.
Forming support groups that address our particular
issues.
Seeking medical assistance early.
Continued dialogues.
Resource information being made available to the
members of the community.
Recommendations
Lack of medical Histories: Information is not
disclosed by older family members and the reasons for
this have not been clearly identified. This will be researched further and recommendations made.
